Day 2
at the Festival Club, St. Ann's, Cape Breton (9 October 2010)

While last night was a quiet one at the Festival Club, tonight it was packed! There was barely room to walk. I was told a bus let 60 people off at the beginning of the night, and when I arrived there was a long line of people waiting to get inside.

For the lucky people who did get in, the music was fantastic. My absolute favorite performance of the night was by the Nuala Kennedy Trio. They were so fun! What I like about them is that their song arrangements are as strong as the arrangements of tunes. They use driving rhythms and chord changes, which put a new spin on old traditions.

I also found it entertaining that Kennedy was accompanying herself with different sounds on a small Casio keyboard, but it added so much to the texture of the music. The crowd response showed what a great group this was, with loud applause and cheers after every set or song this band did. I'm definitely looking forward to hearing more of them.

Once again, I also enjoyed The Outside Track as well. This time I got to see them with Mairi Rankin, who also added the element of step dancing to their mix. They have such a big sound, and I'm anxious to see this band take off. They're one to watch.

With the mixture of the crowd, the warmness of the fire at the back of the hall, and the fantastic music, this was a very enjoyable night at the Festival Club. I couldn't have asked for more.
