Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas, In the Moment (Culburnie, 2007) Combining fiddle and cello -- and Scot with American -- is a winning mix on their joint recording, In the Moment. From the opening "Alley of the Moon Reel," you will be captivated. You will not want the album to end, and even with 14 tracks it will seem all too short. The duo, featuring Alasdair Fraser on fiddle and Natalie Haas on cello, combines self-composed pieces with the works of others to great effect as they move from fiery to mellow and back with an ease only possible from accomplished musicians. Tracks like "Salamanca" and "Trip to Pakistan" give you an indication that this is not a set of tried and trusted traditional tunes. There is innovation. There is adventure, but above all there is a love of good music in evidence here. |
