John & Sharon Knowles,
Ferry Cottage
(independent, 2000)

This husband-and-wife team shares not only a love for each other, but a love for music as well. Ferry Cottage is the result of that musical love.

The album contains 15 traditional Scottish and Irish tunes. Ferry Cottage -- Sharon's home before meeting John -- is the first such collaboration for fiddler John and his Celtic harp-playing wife Sharon. In the true Celtic fashion, the Knowles learned each of the tunes by ear.

The old, traditional tunes are played using predominately the harp and fiddle, with the occasional additional instrument. It is very much like being transported back to a simpler time. All that is missing is a fire burning in the hearth and perhaps some close friends or family to share in the music -- dancing and pints are optional.

While traditional music, many of the tunes are not the pieces typically found on most traditional albums. Ferry Cottage is a nice change from the same old fare of what some consider to be typical traditional Celtic music.
