Likewater, Weightless (independent, 2004) |
Jennifer Claveau and Eric Newby are an exciting songwriting duo from Canada; together with Adam King on drums and John Campbell on bass guitar, they have founded Likewater, a band with a fresh and beautiful sound. Their debut album, Weightless, is an excellent collection of gorgeous chill-out songs brought forward by a great singer, Jennifer Claveau, whose voice reminds me of Celtic pop singers like Dolores O'Riordan and Sinead O'Connor. The melodies and arrangements are perfectly interpreted by two guitars, bass and drums, and the nine self-crafted songs are bound to haunt their listeners all over the world. Catchy rhythms and appealing airs are melted into a unique sound, and the recording and mixing quality are very good. No matter if you listen to the opening track, "When You Hide" -- which is an ideal sample of the playing together of Newby on lead and Claveau on rhythm guitar -- or if you're enjoying the lovely singing together of Claveau and Campbell on "I Know," you will be spellbound by the sheer beauty of the emotional performance. Another highlight is "Who Wouldn't," a romantic song that gave the CD its title; under the water, weightless like water is a spot-on description of Likewater's music. There's no need to say I loved the CD. The only trouble is that it only lasts about 40 minutes, so you just have to press the replay button.
