Ms. Marvel #2: Civil War
by Brian Reed, Robert de la Torre, Mike Wieringo (Marvel Comics, 2007)

Ms. Marvel barely has time to catch her breath after her dramatic entry into the Marvel Comics spotlight before she has to choose sides in the publisher's "big event" for 2007, Civil War.

The conflict sets Iron Man's pro-Registration team against Captain America's stout-hearted opposition. Ms. Marvel chooses the side of the law and quickly finds herself fighting former friends and allies in an all-out effort to catch and incarcerate the rebels. That said, this is by no means a vital chapter in the Civil War storyline, although it does neatly demonstrate how choosing sides in the war is hardly a moral absolute.

This collection also includes two separate stories. In one, Ms. Marvel must deal with Rogue, with whom she has a long and unpleasant personal history, as well as her own insane counterpart from another dimension. In the other, a boy who can turn stories into reality messes with Ms. Marvel's powers -- and, once again, Ms. Marvel may end up doing more harm than good.

The ongoing Ms. Marvel series still has not entirely won me over, but I am still intrigued by this flagship character who has incredible powers and the finest of intentions, but remains deeply flawed in her ability to do the job right.
