Old Crow Medicine Show
(Nettwerk, 2004)

Old Crow Medicine Show's self-titled CD shows the group's ability to perform bluegrass in a style that edges on rock. They certainly have the sound that some new listeners to bluegrass are looking for, one that pushes on to what one would call "in your face" because of the high-energy instrumentation and vocals.

This OCMS recording is quite good, with four originals and many traditionals that were arranged by the group to fit their sound.

Although some of the material has a rock-inflected edge, one can still hear the traditional sounds, especially through the fiddle, banjo, and guit-jo breaks. The members alternate the instrument-playing amongst themselves, giving the project a great feel. The vocals are a little rough-sounding but very clear and strong.

I enjoyed the CD very much and recommend it, especially to the younger faction of bluegrass listeners because of its edginess.
