Christel Rice, Tunnel Vision (Cuezone, 2003) Upon hearing the music of Christel Rice, you might think she was from the Emerald Isle itself. Nothing could be further from the truth. While Christel is of Irish descent and grew up hearing the old traditional tunes and stories, she was born in Philadelphia and studied classical flute. It wasn't until after Christel had graduated from college that she picked up the wooden flute. These days Christel and her family call Brooklyn home, and she plays a Proust wooden flute that was crafted in 1820. Tunnel Vision is Christel's debut CD. It is a spirited recording containing nine traditional and contemporary tunes and tune sets. This is a lively album that will have you donning your dancing shoes. While the opening track might throw you off a bit -- it's an a cappella piece sung in Irish -- Tunnel Vision is like having a private Irish jam session in your own home -- a night out at the pub without all the smoke and noise. Tunnel Vision is an album that shows not all Irish music sounds the same. Traditional or contemporary tunes, it makes no difference -- it's all about having some good craic, and Christel provides the music to get things started. |
