Kate Rusby,
Holly Head
(Purerecords, 2019)

A Christmas record is always a risk. Regardless of how good the tracks may sound, people can have that mad notion that it should only be listened to in December -- and even then they argue about how soon before the 25th.

This album from the very distinctive Yorkshire voice of Kate Rusby could be the one to dispel those traditions and qualms.

On this beautiful CD, Rusby has gathered together a selection of songs that will bring joy to any season -- and who knows, you might even play "While Shepherds Watched" on the beach in summer. Having said that, you will find listening to the 12 songs on offer here that the Yuletide season will be greatly enhanced.

The previously mentioned track is probably the best known one on the album, but Rusby as usual has gathered together a diverse selection with old, almost forgotten songs like "Salute the Morn" and "Christmas is Merry" with wonderful new arrangements, mixing them with new works such as "The Holly King" from her own pen and "I am Christmas" by Bill Meek & John Connolly.

One the most intriguing songs here is from the pen of John Rox and is the "out of left field" request for a "Hippo for Christmas." Listen closely to this amusing request.

She also features "Bleak Midwinter," marrying the words of Christina Rossetti to music from Gustav Holst in her own unique arrangement.

This is one Christmas gift that keeps on giving -- giving joy to the ear at anytime of the year, and a CD that will be listened to for many Yuletide seasons to come.
