Swingin' Fiddles,
Wir Waanderins
(independent, 2006)

Laura Lockyer, at the tender age of 19, is the seasoned veteran of Swingin' Fiddles, a small band from the Shetland region of Scotland. The award-winning young fiddler is joined in the group by pianist Astryd Jamieson, 16, and fiddler Maggie Adamson, 14, along with guitarist Brian Nicholson (whose age is not revealed).

When you look at their ages, do remember I'm writing this in April 2007, and they formed the band in November 2003 and recorded their first album a year later. Needless to say, they got started young (with the possible exception of Brian, whose age remains a mystery).

Wir Waanderins would be a good CD at any age, but I'm more impressed after considering the youth of the musicians involved. I'm curious to see what another few years will do for their careers.

The disc's 13 tracks are not remarkably arranged; the band has put together a fairly straightforward package, with fiddles playing in unison over the foundation of guitar and piano. The tunes are primarily from the Scottish and Shetland traditions, with a few Irish, American and French-Canadian pieces tossed in for good measure.

They play their music with skill on an album that should inspire young fiddlers to keep at it and not let their rosin grow cold. In the future, however, I'd like to hear Swingin' Fiddles break it up a bit more, with the fiddles going on in different directions and taking a few more risks with the melody. That, I believe, would help set them apart from any number of talented young fiddlers making themselves heard in the Celtic musical world.
