Thief, directed by Michael Mann (United Artists, 1981) Thief deserves all aces in the realm of tough-guy cinema. I know I sound a bit foolish. But Thief, starring James Caan as a professional safecracker looking to make one big score so he can finally turn his life around, totally comes across. It is easily Caan's best movie. Tuesday Weld's, too. Don't believe me? Their scene in the coffee shop is incredible. If I were sober, this review might be more insightful. Even so, Thief is a masterpiece of crime cinema. Tangerine Dream's soundtrack makes it all the more so. This is director Michael Mann at his coolest. It's a landmark piece of crime fiction cinema. Check it out. |
