Two Guitars,
Bending Time
(independent, 2010)

Gus Wieland and Brian Conigliaro are two guitarists with many credits. Bending Time is a six-track EP of covers by the pair, performing as Two Guitars, except for Conigliaro's "Riverfest." (Although it is not called an EP, I use the term since there is a bit less than half an hour of playing time.)

The best tracks are the two instrumentals. Although both men have pleasant voices, the guitars, all acoustic, are the real standouts here. There is very little evidence of lead and rhythm playing. Both guitars weave in and out seamlessly with each other.

Eddie Torres guests on percussion on the two most dramatic cuts, Peter Green's "Black Magic Woman" (which adds Conigliaro's harmonica) and "She's Not There."

This CD does not fit in well with any of the usual classifications. The songs are classic rock, and the playing has a mellow folk feel, but with the intricacy of jazz. There are a lot of duos performing acoustic rock, but Wieland and Conigliaro are instrumentally far ahead of nearly all of them.
