various artists,
Celtic Voices
(Green Linnet, 1999)

Celtic Voices is yet another great compilation CD of Celtic music in a long line of Celtic compilations. On this one appear such favorites as Loreena McKennitt and Altan, as well as the Iron Horse, Kila, Anuna and Talitha MacKenzie, to name a few -- in all, fifteen tracks from various artists.

Tunes range from McKennitt's melodic "Snow," which blends her harp and voice with flute and cymbal to bring out the quiet reflections of winter, to the toe-tapping jig of Tannas' "The Old Hag Set," which will pick you up with it's light-hearted pace and get you shaking with its pipes and strings, aided by the Gaelic voices of the singers.

Altan makes an appearance with "Si Do Mhaimeo I." The blend of the didgeridoo -- an ancient Australian wind instrument -- and Jew's harp adds a very interesting effect to what is otherwise a very traditional sounding piece. Other selections include "Seachtain" by John Spillane, "Port Na Bpucai" by Noirin Ni Riain, "The Green Laurel" by Anuna, "She's Gone" by Dan Ar Braz and "Rithill Aill" by Capercaillie's Karen Matheson.

For the most part, this is an excellent cross section of Celtic music -- mostly on the softer side, but definitely worth a spin. All but two of the songs are in Gaelic -- a language I haven't quite learned, yet. But all in all, Celtic Voices provides 15 good tracks of variety and Celtic flavor. Good for the Celtic fan as well as those looking to add to their collection of world music; this collection should not disappoint.
