Sara Wendt,
Here's Us
(City Canyons, 2006)

From the second that you play this CD, you know you are just going to want to hear all of its lusciously clear vocals and guitar (featuring the amazing Ann Klein -- also a member of the equally fabulous Mary Lee's Corvette and a kick-ass rock chick solo artist herself). I first encountered Ann in New York City last April appearing with Mary Lee Cortez, and when the chance came up to review this Sara Wendt CD, I bit their hands off!

One thing that always grabs me is an instant infectious hook in a song, and all six tracks on this CD (more of an EP, really) can certainly be considered of that poptastically infectious calibre. These are the sort of tracks you would like to hear in your car or chilling out at home, the kind you would find yourself humming subliminally when you least expect it.

"I'll Be Waiting" has a bit of a Stevie Nicks feel, but in a strictly contemporary way with a voice that shifts from a driving belt to a swirl soprano with some gorgeous backup singing to complement by Klein.

The next track, "King of the Ghosts," reminds me of the music you would hear in a a Tarantino movie, with just the right sleazy bar atmospheric guitar backing. This is probably my favourite track with its haunting effect. "Pretty Dark Knight" is more of a folky genre, but it still retains an edge of passion and power that you wouldn't find in a typically ethereal piece of folk.

It is obvious from the work on this CD that Wendt is a major talent who deserves the kind of recognition that Suzanne Vega or someone of a similar reputation has. I wish her all the luck in the world.
