The Christmas List,
directed by Charles Jarrott
(Shavick Entertainment, 1997)

If you are looking for a light drama that is fun for the whole family, get your copy of The Christmas List in time for holiday viewing.

Melody Parris's best friend Naomi (Enuka Okuma) tells her to make out a long Christmas list of everything that she would like to have. It is not about getting the things on the list, but believing you can make your dreams come true and feeling empowered.

Melody (Mimi Rogers) has been behind the same perfume counter for seven years and can name any of the scents blindfolded, but others get promoted. She has been in a relationship with George (Jano Frandsen) for four years and is not getting promoted there either. Her mother (Stella Stevens) is always on her back.

So Melody makes out a lengthy Christmas list and Naomi drops it into the mailbox for their department store Santa. The wishes begin coming true, but not the way Melody wanted them to. Her life becomes a whirlwind of change as she gets all of the things on her list, but they all seem to work out wrong.

I really like the storyline for this movie. It puts a fresh touch on the old story of wishes gone wrong. The crises are interwoven intricately and the segues are smooth. The characters develop nicely and all parts are played extremely well. Rogers shines in this lead role and, as always, gives an exceptional performance.

The suspense sneaks inside you. It is subtle but quite effective in keeping you watching. This is light drama -- a "fun" story that thoroughly entertains. It will have you believing in Christmas miracles. After watching this movie, you may write your own Christmas list.

The Christmas List is worth every penny of the purchase price. It is good, clean family fun that everybody can enjoy and with which most viewers can identify.
