Only Hooligans
Write on Desks

by Teri

Written and produced by what seems to be a budding artist being shackled by the public school system, Only Hooligans Write on Desks gives exactly as its title suggests. Looking in it is kind of like finding random pieces of interesting paper left behind -- notes and random strangeness from unidentified people who share your desk real estate.

There are comics, demented little Easter stories (dealing with baby chicks and pet cats -- 'nuff said), drawings that you can color, presents of stickers and pages that look like altered books. The 8.5" x 11" format allows for a great deal of artistic license in the layout, and Teri seems to have fully grasped this. The layout of pages ranges from straight horizontal/vertical to hand-shaped text and text that radiates from the center of the page.

Some of it is hand-written, which is a little difficult to read in places, but the vast majority is computer or typewriter text that copied well. Artistically, it's fun to look at and fun to read (she's got a fabulous list of 20 things to do in the grocery store that had me giggling despite my attempts to be all highbrow neutral), and is definitely worth a subscription, which also includes things like homemade stickers and a hand-made notebook.

You can pick up a copy for $2 (or a subscription for $10) by mailing well-concealed cash to Teri at Suite #219, 2906 West Broadway, Vancouver, BC V6K 2G8, Canada.
