Stamp Stories #23
by Laura Tompkins

The story of Stamp Stories is almost as interesting as the zine itself. Laura was a lawyer who "found" art like some people find religion and quit her job to be a zinemaker. She bought a used copy machine from a place she used to work and started collecting artwork -- her own and others' -- to bind together to make this quarterly publication that's grown to take over her life.

Luckily for us, it's worked for Laura. We get the result. Stamp Stories is one of the oldest art zines published, and for good reason. Every issue is chock-full of fun projects, inspirational artwork and products we didn't know we needed.

In this issue, for examplle, Laura covers how to use your blender pens, gives us money saving tips for artist's supplies and making homemade glue. She gives us paper dolls and tag dolls, and shows us how to make a treasure box from an old book. She makes a stamped clock, a partridge in a pear tree, art journals and a portfolio. She reviews using beeswax on collage, including a sample that's pasted in, and lists some mail art projects that are upcoming.

Every single page you turn has artwork, projects and inspirational ideas. And at $16 for an entire year of these things, you can't go wrong.
