Burning Bridget Cleary, Everything is Alright (independent, 2008) Well, here's a nice surprise! I've been reviewing some of the older CDs that have come to Rambles.NET over the past two decades but didn't, for whatever reason, get reviewed. In the process, I examined the band's 2011, 2013 and 2015 recordings, but here at the bottom of a box I found an earlier album from the band. Nice! Everything is Alright came out in 2008, two years after their debut with Catharsis in 2006. This is the original lineup: Genna Gillespie on fiddles and vocals, Rose Baldino on fiddles, vocals and tin whistle, and Rose's father Lou Baldino on guitar, vocals, bass and keyboard. Guests are Doug Evans on percussion and Nate Godshall on bodhran. Although Gillespie did not remain with the band until its eventual dissolution in 2017, this album is another example of how well-matched she and Rose Baldino were, both vocally and instrumentally. There's a nice mix of music here, including mostly traditionals but also covers of music by the likes of Brian MacNeill and Joanie Madden, plus a few band originals. In fact, one of my favorite tracks is a set of tunes penned, respectively, by Lou ("Rolling Hills"), Rose & Lou ("Jester") and Rose ("Phoenix"). Lou's fanciful song, "The Faeries," is also a lot of fun, and Genna and Rose join forces to tell Bridget Cleary's story in "Ah Tusa Shi." Their set combining Nico Carstens' "Waram Patat" with three traditionals -- "Jean's Reel," "Miss Shepherd" and "Mason's Apron" -- is a hoot. It's all solid stuff, and it makes for a pleasurable listening experience. There's not a lot I can say about Burning Bridget Cleary that hasn't already been said. The short review is simply this: If you find one of the band's several recordings, pick it up and enjoy it. You won't be disappointed. |
