Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker,
Seedlings All
(Rough Trade, 2018)

This album came with very little background on the performers or the songs, so as all good reviews go the music must speak for all.

Seedlings All, by Josienne Clarke and Ben Walker, opens with "Chicago." Its plaintive opening by Clarke leads into some lovely instrumentalism that draws the listener into a story-song in the best tradition. I particularly like that the lyrics are not lost in the music, as so often happens. Her diction is clear, as it must be when a song needs to speak to us.

This fresh sound carries over to other tracks, such as "Bells Ring" and "Ghost Light." The title track appears less clear to my ear but has a pleasing melody that retains the attention. To pick a representative track I would plump for "Tender Heart."

The album of 11 tracks is well worth a listen if you enjoy good music presented without ostentation. The songs are deep enough to hold the attention while the voice on offer is both easy on the ear and compelling. Meanwhile, the backing instrumentals are very strong and solid.

One would love to know more about the tracks that are so well written and performed.
