DC League of Super-Pets,
directed by Jared Stern & Sam J. Levine
(DC/Warner Bros., 2022)

Superhero movies are in vogue, and pets are always cute. Combined? Winner!

The animated feature DC League of Super-Pets is a refreshing break from the ceaseless deluge of superhero movies ... particularly from DC, which seems unable to put together a winning formula that lasts from film to film. This, at least, is animated, which seems to be DC's strong suit.

And pets are pretty much always adorable.

Super-Pets is not destined to become a superhero classic, but it's inoffensive at worst and downright clever at times. It doesn't hurt that movie features the comedic duo of Dwayne Johnson as Superman's dog Krypto and Kevin Hart as the abandoned shelter dog Ace, who combine to form an unlikely alliance after Krypto loses his powers to a piece of green kryptonite and Ace gains invulnerability after exposure to orange kryptonite.

Together, they must fight the awe-inspiring evil of Lulu, voiced by Kate McKinnon, a hairless guinea pig who developed powers and super intelligence of her own while serving as an experiment in Lex Luthor's laboratory.

Krypto and Ace aren't alone; the orange kryptonite also gifts the tortoise Merton (Natasha Lyonne) with super speed, the pig PB (Vanessa Bayer) with the ability to shrink and grow, and the squirrel Chip (Diego Luna) with lightning powers. (The question of why a squirrel and a massive farmyard pig were in an animal shelter in the first place will have to wait for another day.)

Lulu's evil plan involves freeing Luther (Marc Maron) from prison and destroying Superman (John Krasinski) and his Justice League friends: Batman (Keanu Reeves), Wonder Woman (Jameela Jamil), Aquaman (Jemaine Clement), the Flash (John Early) and Green Lantern (Dascha Polanco). Aiding her are a gang of enhanced guinea pigs, each with unique abilities of their own.

Like I said, it's cute. It's amusing. It's even a little heartwarming at times. It's also fairly predictable, so far as its plot goes, but kids will probably love it -- and adults will probably enjoy watching it, too.
