Diary of the Black Widow
by Bret M. Herholz (Alterna, 2007)

Part of the problem with Diary of the Black Widow becomes evident when reading the afterword from writer and artist Bret M. Herholz. It reads, in part:

The artwork in issue one didn't turn out great! In places the artwork is very weak and I could have probably done so much better. But it's the best artwork I've ever done. And I have no intention of changing it....

Any writer who recognizes the weakness of his work but refuses to put in the extra effort to improve it certainly isn't ready to seek out a publisher. Personally, I can't imagine how he found one willing to publish this inferior work.

The story is about a woman so heartbreakingly beautiful that she can murder with impunity and no one will suspect her, no matter how damning the evidence. Any cleverness in the concept is buried beneath amateurish pencil drawings and bad dialogue.

Herholz apparently believes the height of humor can be found by having one character say something, then having another character repeat it back. Ha ha ha! Also, there's nothing more hilarious than a stupid detective inspector who continually derides his smart assistant. Ha ha ha!

Diary of the Black Widow is pretty poor fare. Perhaps next time Herholz should wait until at least he thinks his work is good before inflicting it on innocent readers.
