Final Girl by David Hutchison & Lee Duhig (Antarctic Press, 2007) Final Girl purports to be classic slasher-style yarn in which readers will find "unspeakable terrors," "madness and death," "an unhealthy dose of black humor" and "a totally new experience in grueling horror." I wouldn't say the book lives up to even one of the claims proudly splashed on its back cover. Heck, even the promise that "each page is splattered in David Hutchison's gore-drenched, full-color artwork" falls short of the truth; there's gore, yes, but not enough to qualify as "gore-drenched," and many of the pages are monochromatic or tinted grayscale -- certainly not full color. Characters are flat, dialogue is boring, the plot is incomprehensible and doesn't lead to any conclusions. Someone is killing people, but why? Why are they even there? Why should we care? It's unusual for me to finish a book and have nothing positive to say about it, but this one simply wasted my time. |
