Valerie Estelle Frankel, Pop Culture in the Whedonverse (LitCrit Press, 2014) There's not a lot to say about this hefty tome except, wow. The author, Valerie Estelle Frankel, put an incredible amount of work into collecting and organizing every single pop culture reference in Joss Whedon's extensive world of television and movies. Of course, that means everything from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel to Firefly, Dollhouse and Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog through The Avengers, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and The Cabin in the Woods. If a character said or did something that references any pop-culture icon, Frankel found it, wrote it down and tells you exactly where it came from. You'll find references to 50 Shades of Grey, Angela's Ashes, the Books for Dummies series, classics like The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Walden and A Room With a View and Chaucer. There's The Graduate, The Grateful Dead and Greek and Roman mythology. There's Anne of Green Gables and Apocalypse Now. There's Jenny Craig and The Creature from the Black Lagoon. There's Robin Hood, Battlestar Galactica and Battlefield Earth. This is the kind of book that's just fun to sit down and page through, and maybe grin a bit when you recognize familiar references. At 740 pages, don't expect to read it all in one sitting! |
