Freakdog, aka Red Mist,
directed by Paddy Breathnach
(Starz, 2008)

One reason I rented Freakdog was to see Arielle Kebbel, who did a nice turn in The Uninvited. She is the lead here and is on screen for 90 percent of the movie.

Kebbel has a very full, slightly downturned mouth that is hugely expressive. Big eyes, too. You see a transformation come over her in the course of the movie, changing from Ken-pitier to Ken-hater. (I had to smile when she tells the cop near the end, "In a heartbeat.")

The movie is about a hospital janitor who ends up in a coma and finds the means to take revenge of the people who put him there through out-of-body projections. This movie is ... the only word that comes to mind is "good." It is well shot, moves at a pretty fast pace (especially at the end) and is decently acted by a cast of mostly unknowns. Besides Kebbel, the cast includes Sarah Carter, Stephen Dillane, Andrew Lee Potts, Alex Wyndham and Katie McGrath.

Considering what is happening in horror movies these days, this movie is rather remarkable for the restraint it shows. There's gore and several nasty deaths, but these shots are never gratuitous. They just show what is necessary to make the point.

This belongs to the horror subgenre of rogue medical students. This is a worthy if unspectacular addition. (The absolute pinnacle in this subgenre is, of course, Re-Animator.)

By the way, the copy I rented was titled Red Mist. Freakdog, which is an important word in the movie's plot, I think is a better title.
