James Finn Garner,
Politically Correct Holiday Stories for
an Enlightened Yuletide Season

(Macmillan, 1995)

These stories haven't aged well. In fact, the concept in general has paled since its inception nearly three decades ago.

In the mid-1990s, James Finn Garner's "politically correct" adaptations were kind of funny. These days, however, there are segments of the population who, without a trace of irony, take great offense at things where none is intended and, in fact, are often willing to look quite hard to find some reason, however remote, to spark outrage. Conversely, there are likewise far too many people who have doubled down with no greater desire than to cause offense wherever possible.

Still, I found an old copy of Politically Correct Holiday Stories for an Enlightened Yuletide Season among my things and decided to take a fresh look.

Within the first few pages, I was bored. Nearly 100 pages to go!

The stories included here are "'Twas the Night Before Solstice," "Frosty the Persun of Snow," "The Nutcracker," "Rudolph the Nasally Empowered Reindeer" and, worst of the lot, "A Christmas Carol." They are hackneyed, minimally funny at best, and best left to rest in the 1990s.
