Injustice: Gods Among Us Year Two, Vol. 1
by Tom Taylor, various artists (DC Comics, 2015)

The conflict in Year One of Injustice: Gods Among Us ended with Batman crippled, Wonder Woman in a coma, and Green Arrow and Martian Manhunter dead, among other casualties. Both sides of the war between Superman's authoritarian rule and Batman's resistance have suffered heavy losses, and things ramp up a bit when the entire Green Lantern Corps gets involved.

With a few key exceptions, they're not on Superman's side.

But in Year Two, Superman, Lex Luthor and the remaining loyal members of the Justice League won't be fighting alone. Sinestro and his private army have their own plans to stop the Green Lanterns.

Meanwhile, Gotham has become a police state under the authority of people recruited and given powers by Superman's team. Commissioner Jim Gordon, his paralyzed daughter Barbara Gordon, aka Oracle, and her Birds of Prey want to take the city back.

There are more deaths, injuries, prisoners taken and lives changed as Superman tightens his grip in his bid to control Earth and enforce a state of peace. Anyone who has played the popular video game on which this series is based knows how things will stand when this five-year prequel series comes to an end.

I have not played the game, however, and I have only a tenuous notion of the world in which it is set.

For the time being, at least, I am thoroughly enjoying the journey toward that point. Tom Taylor writes a good story, and the variety of artists who illustrate his work certainly do the action and characters justice!
