Injustice: Gods Among Us Year Three, Vol. 1
by Tom Taylor, various artists (DC Comics, 2016)

When Superman turned into an authoritarian dictator, sworn to maintain peace throughout the Earth at any cost in the pages of Injustice: Gods Among Us, the likes of Batman, Martian Manhunter, Black Canary and Green Arrow couldn't stop him. Neither could the entirety of the Green Lantern Corps.

Now, in Year Three, it's time for the magicians and sorcerers to give it a try.

Knowing that Superman is vulnerable to magic, Batman and his remaining allies turn to John Constantine, Zatanna, Doctor Fate and others to see if they can stop Superman's relentless subjugation of the planet. Unfortunately, their efforts are opposed by the powerful Spectre, the powerful Spirit of Vengeance, who approves of Superman's methods of imposing order on an unruly population. Against the Spectre, even the eternal Phantom Stranger might be unable to prevail.

Losses continue to pile up, as Superman's team proves perfectly willing to kill their opposition in order to keep the peace. On the plus side, a hero who died earlier in the series quite literally returns from the dead.

And a ruse, conjured up by Batman and Constantine, exiles Superman's consciousness into a dream state where Lois and his unborn child didn't die. It will be interesting to see where this plot thread leads us.

As has always been the case in this series so far, the writing by Tom Taylor is taut and quite thrilling, and it keeps readers guessing where the story will go next. Art throughout is solid. Combined, Injustice is a really good series to enjoy.
