I Killed Adolf Hitler by Jason (Fantagraphics, 2007) It's a strange world, where murder-for-hire is a common, everyday and entirely legal fact of life. One professional hitman is very good at his job, even though his obsession for his work costs him his girlfriend. But then he gets a strange offer -- a there-and-back trip in a one-of-a-kind time machine to 1938, where he must find and kill Adolf Hitler. The mission doesn't go as planned, however, and the assassin is left behind in the past as Hitler himself travels to modern times. And from there, things get convoluted. Anyone who has read Jason's previous works knows a little of what to expect -- anthropomorphic, black-and-white characters with curiously expressive features, a minimalistic approach to dialogue, an unusual perspective on a surprisingly sweet romance and twists to the plot that you'll never see coming. I Killed Adolf Hitler certainly covers all bases and never disappoints. Jason is an artist who never wastes a word or a line of ink when it comes to telling a story. And yet, his books tap a rich, deep vein of the storytelling tradition that is unmatched in the graphic field. If you haven't discovered him yet, discover him now. |
