Melissa Marr,
Wicked Lovely
(HarperTeen, 2007)

Follow the rules ... Aislinn has had that drilled into her for years by her grandmother. You see, if she doesn't, the humans might lock her up as crazy -- and the faeries might do even worse.

Unfortunately, Ash (as Aislinn prefers to be called) catches the eye of Faery's Summer King, Keenan. He's sought a bride for the past 900 years. Signs are evident that Ash could be the one -- especially when his own mother -- Beira, the Winter Queen -- breaks the rules and starts to interfere.

Wicked Lovely is an interesting read with more than one great twist. I enjoyed the book, but I believe that the second will be much better.

It's always hard to build a world in a first novel particularly in fantasy where there is a blend of the real, fantasy and that surreal element that the combination elicits. My biggest problem is -- I really never got a description of Ash. "Beautiful" from someone else's lips doesn't count. I wanted to see more of her. I also wanted to see more of the places where the stories took place. Just a few words would engage the reader much more.

One very strong plus -- the ending was excellent. Very well done, and I would hope to see a more well-developed second novel.
