David Pearson, A Deadly Dividend (The Book Folks, 2020) A Deadly Dividend is a fast moving and highly readable crime novel set in present day Dublin. David Pearson is a new name to me, but on this outing he is definitely a writer to watch. As in all fiction we need to be drawn to characters that are not only interesting but believable and within the bounds of current detective fiction, and Burke and Moore certainly fit the bill. Ireland not having armed police has not until recently started to feature as a location for exciting crime novels, but that has been changing, and this book is a major step forward in that direction. The police procedure is well done without slowing the action, and the characters -- especially Burke, a bit of an Irish "Dirty Harry" -- keep the reader amused as well as engaged. The financial dealings background indicate a past in high finance or a great bit of research by the author. It elucidates matters without being pedantic and the action moves along at a great pace. |
