Rattle the Boards, The Parish Platform (Doon, 2008) I got this CD for review back in 2008, and at some point I must have intended to give it a listen -- because the case has been rattling around among my boxes and stacks of CDs to be reviewed, but the disc itself has been missing. Well, one of the benefits of moving is the amount of things you find tucked away, and the missing disc was found pressed between some other, unrelated CDs. Finally! Sorry, boys, for the long delay. If it still matters, you put out a good CD! Rattle the Boards is -- or, rather was, as their website seems to be kaput -- John Nugent, Benny McCarthy, John T. Egan and Pat Ryan. Joining them as guests on the album are Jon Kenny, Decky O'Dywer, Donnchadh Gough, Des Dillon, Albie Grace, Paul Ryan and Bruno Staehelin. It's as neat a collection of traditional Irish music as you'll find. Nothing stands out as particularly unusual about these boys -- although the bit of trumpet on track 5 is a nice touch that I wish they'd used a bit more. Overall, their music is arranged and played well, for an utterly pleasant listening experience. If you're looking for a collection of Irish tunes and songs, there are certainly plenty to choose from -- and this one would make a fine choice. (Oh, it's also cool that the CD looks like a little LP!) |
