Room on the Broom,
directed by Jan Lachauer & Max Lang
(BBC, 2012)

This is something I never would have seen if my 7-year-old twins hadn't chosen it from a bevy of Netflix offerings.

It's short, scant on dialogue and utterly adorable.

This 25-minute-long animated feature is about a witch (voiced by Gillian Anderson) who is spellcasting in the woods one day when an incantation accidentally awakens a nearby dragon. She soon heads home on her broom, cat in tow, while -- unbeknownst to her -- the dragon, hungry for witch 'n' chips, pursues.

Along the way, the witch keeps dropping things, such as her pointed hat and her wand, and as she searches for each item she discovers a wayward critter -- a dog, a bird and a frog -- in need of a home. To the cat's disgust, she finds room for each on her broom but, now too heavy, it breaks -- and the dragon quickly catches up to her as the animals tumble to the ground. It falls to the animals -- who, let's face it, didn't seem to like each other too much -- to work together to save her.

It's a cute tale, based on the children's book by Julia Donaldson. with a simple animation and a wonderful message about friendship and cooperation for young viewers. Dry, bemused-sounding narration by Simon Pegg really pulls it all together!

Besides Netflix, Room on the Broom is available for streaming or purchase on Amazon.com. Also be sure to check out the book, likewise available through Amazon.
