Ship in the Clouds,
Ship in the Clouds
(independent, 2020)

Ship in the Clouds' self-titled debut CD is one of those perfect little albums that you can put on repeat and imagine there's a genuine Irish seisiun going on somewhere close by.

The instrumental quartet consists of Laura Feddersen on fiddle and Nathan Gourley on guitar -- whom I've reviewed previously as a duo -- along with Natasha Sheehy on button accordion and Anna Colliton on bodhran. The band, three-quarters of which is based in Boston and the other fourth in New York, hails largely from the American Midwest; the one exception, Sheehy, is a native of West Limerick, Ireland.

The album came together from a series of recording sessions just before COVID-19 forced the bandmates to part. But the result is certainly a worthy addition to any music library.

The album includes more than three dozen tunes, parceled out over 14 tracks. There are no distracting vocals or detours into a more rock- or jazz-oriented vein; the musicians here stick to the basics: session tunes that flow seamlessly from one to another. Each musician takes a turn in the spotlight, but for the most part they work as a cohesive unit as they sail through sets of jigs, reels, slides, polkas and even a pair of old-time waltzes.

I will always love this type of solid, no-frills Irish tune-making. Ship in the Clouds should be in your collection.
