Dean Wesley Smith, All Eve's Hallows (Phobos, 2005) Billie Stern isn't your average former-Marine. She sees trolls ... in New York City. The City Knights -- a secret, thousand-year-old organization that protects people from mystical creatures (and, sometimes, protects mystical creatures from people) -- catch up to her just in time ... before she decides to seek medication for her delusions. You see, there really are trolls. And dragons. And all sorts of monsters and fey beasties that people simply don't see. But they're the least of the Knights' problems. You see, a diabolical sorceress, Eve, is plotting to unleash a vast evil and take over the world (starting, of course, with the Big Apple). What the Knights need to stop her is one bad-@ss woman who can kick a little mythical butt. Billie might be just the person they're looking for. If you love hard-hitting heroes fighting against goofus bad guys, you've come to the right place. Dean Wesley Smith serves up far more laughs than chills in All Eve's Hallows, but this light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek fantasy romp is definitely worth a read. And I wouldn't mind a sequel. |
