Stephen Schwartz, Wicked (Decca, 2003) |
Wicked is an amazing new musical that should be on Broadway for a long time if the acting lives up to its dazzling soundtrack. All singers are quite talented and fill their roles with strong performances. Based on the book by Gregory Maguire, Wicked tells the true story of the Wicked Witch of the West, here named Elphaba. While the book concentrates on Elphaba's struggle against the Wizard's politics and henchmen, the musical concentrates on her relationship with Glinda, once her best friend. Songs range from the poignant "I'm Not That Girl" to the satirical "Thank Goodness." The Wizard appears, as do Boq the Tin Woodsman and many other familiar characters. The story of Wicked is entirely original, building on The Wizard of Oz but taking it in a new direction. The beautiful singers and incredible music guarantee this musical will be a classic. - Rambles |
