Super Teen*Topia #1: Invisible Touch by Kirk Kushin, Gonzalo Martinez (Forcewerks, 2008) They're young and they have superpowers. That's the tie that binds a group of high schoolers in Invisible Touch, the first volume of Kirk Kushin's Super Teen*Topia. Unlike the many teen-friendly super groups in mainstream comics, this book stands apart because this gang of kids ain't sidekick material. In a world where superpowers are fairly common, these kids mostly just want to get through high school intact. A few are gung-ho to form a team and Fight Evil, but the others are only reluctantly drawn into using their powers and, gag, wearing costumes in public. Super Teen*Topia is a winner simply by virtue of writing engaging characters who exist somewhat realistically in a not-quite-realistic world. It's sort of like Dawson's Creek -- that show is still hip and current to kids today, right? -- for the super-powered set. There's as much about fumbling relationships and fitting in at school as there is about spandex and battling bad guys. Kudos to writer Kirk Kushin for accomplishing that difficult task! Art by Gonzalo Martinez is a bonus, neat and clean and easy on the eyes. This is a quality product all around. |
