Summerland, directed by Jessica Swale (IFC, 2020) It's World War II, and London is being blitzed by German bombers. Alice (Gemma Arterton) is a reclusive woman in an English village living by the sea in southern England who is required by circumstances to take in Frank (Lucas Bond), a young boy forced to evacuate from the city, as a boarder. At first, she resists, but the two form an odd friendship. Summerland is a beautiful story about two very unalike people having to inhabit the same space. It's brilliantly nuanced and well-acted on everyone's part. Gugu Mubatha Raw and Penelope Wilton also star in an intensely emotional film set against the chaotic backdrop of war. |
