Libre's mom gets new home, new name, after recovering from mange in foster care

Libre's mother, a 16-month-old Boston terrier named Carla by rescuers at the Lancaster County SPCA, has been adopted by a retired Willow Street couple.

The plight of Libre, a puppy rescued from a southern Lancaster County farm on July 4, garnered national attention during his recovery at a Dillsburg veterinary clinic.

But the mother -- who, like Libre, was suffering from demodectic mange -- was later surrendered to the SPCA on July 8. The dog was fostered by an SPCA staff member while she recovered from the condition.

Unlike Libre, Carla had only a minor case of the mite-based infection, the SPCA reported. The condition was treated with a prescription medication.

Now, according to a statement issued Monday by shelter spokeswoman Jennifer Ericson, Carla has found a permanent home.

The couple -- identified by the SPCA only as Jerry and Susan -- adopted the dog Aug. 13 and renamed her Bella, Ericson said in the release.

Ericson said the couple's last name is not being released because they want to maintain their privacy.

Susan, in the release, said Bella is still quite timid, "but she's coming around, and now even gives kisses."

Bella, who had never before lived indoors, was also housebroken during her foster care. On Aug. 12, she was spayed to prevent further breeding, the SPCA said.
