Steve Toutonghi, Join (Soho Press, 2019) A new technology allows individual people to "join" -- to become part of a collective consciousness. But what would this mean in Real Life? I think author Steve Toutonghi gave this a lot of thought, and the various plots outlined in Join are based on this premise. It's a new -- at least to me! -- and fascinating dystopian concept, and I found the notion very intriguing. In the book, Toutonghi explores ideas of technology, individuality, society and more. However, I don't think the various plots really did justice to a fascinating premise. To me, Toutonghi's plots appear pretty random; while they do illustrate some of the concepts, they also seem to go all over the place, rather than being focused to make any sort of point. |
