Shane Warner, Absolutely (Australiana, 2005) |
On the Shane Warner CD Absolutely, we have 15 tracks boasting a very listenable Americana sound -- one assumes from the record label, Australiana, that there is an Antipodean connection even though the music was recorded by Warner in Nashville. There is very little in the way of background on the CD insert and, unusually, there are no credits given for the tracks, so casual listeners cannot be sure if he deserves a songwriter's praise in addition to his performing talent. However, his website (URL below) makes it clear Warner hails from New Zealand and is, indeed, his own songwriter. I like the man's style as he delivers a great combination of the upbeat and jaunty story-songs that are ideally suited to his voice and his very able backing musicians and singers. "Souvenirs" is a track that I particularly enjoyed. Another close contender for a favorite song is "Southern Wind." Other tracks include "You're My Favourite Waste of Time," "Fallen in Love Way Over My Heart" and "Three Beers to Mexico." If you like your country music with a New Zealander's flair, this disc is worth the investment. by Nicky Rossiter |
