Lauren Weisberger, Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns (Simon & Schuster, 2013) This is the worthy sequel to The Devil Wears Prada. Ten years have passed since Andrea Sachs worked for Miranda Priestly at Runway magazine. Much has happened since we last checked in with Andy. Sadly, she no longer has Alex in her life. He's moved on to other people and other places. Her best friend Lily has relocated to Colorado and is reinventing her life there. And Andy herself has launched an upscale bridal fashion magazine called The Plunge. Her business partner is none other than Emily, her one-time fellow sufferer at Miranda's beck and call. More big news is that Andy is marrying Max Harrison, who comes from big Manhattan money. Well, he USED to come from big money. He's going to have to work hard to build the family business and its reputation back up again, from some mistakes that his father made, at the end. It seems as though things are going well for Andy these days. She's got a good and interesting job and is her own boss. She's got a good relationship going ... mostly. Isn't it awful, then, to hear that she still gets nightmares about working for Miranda? It's been 10 years, for heaven's sake. That horrid woman can't possibly storm back into her life now, can she? Can she? I'll refrain from revealing more details of this story. It's enough to say that some unexpected twists and turns show up in Andy's life. Some are good, some are bad, and some are uncertain and worrisome. And while I worried along with Andy for much of the last half of the book, I was not disappointed at the way things worked themselves out by the last page. The author made an interesting choice with the narration. The first book was told in first person by Andy, giving immediacy to how she felt about being constantly under Miranda's thumb. This story still focuses on Andy as the central character, but it's told in third person instead. She's not distanced from the reader, though. We still move through her feelings and her perspectives, along with her. I merely wonder about the decision to change point of view, especially since the first book was so successful. If you enjoyed The Devil Wears Prada, in either book or movie form, you may want to pick up this one to catch the follow-up story. And even though this title stands alone on its own merit, it's best to have read the first book first. Andy does her best not to backtrack and to relive what happened back at Runway. You'll understand why, if you've read The Devil Wears Prada. Even better: Read the two, back to back. I'm now heading for the third book, When Life Gives You Lululemons. I like Andy, and her stories are compelling ones. |
