Sara Wendt, Weightless with Love (City Canyon, 2007) New York-based singer-songwriter Sara Wendt has released her second album, Weightless with Love, under the independent City Canyons label. Together with co-writer Ann Klein (guitars, keyboards, sitar, mandolin, backing vocals) and a varied lineup featuring pennywhistle, bass, drums, percussion and cello, Wendt recorded nine originals and one cover song with a mixture of folk, rock and blues. Wendt has a beautiful voice, and her warm and rich singing is certainly the most significant feature of her music. The CD starts with the brilliant rock song "I'm for You," featuring Tony Tino's stirring bass lines, Jordan Jancz's cello, Sammy Merendino's intoxicating rhythms, Klein's great guitar licks and Wendt's bewitching singing. I was instantly captured by the sound. The following "Pretty Dark Knight" is a hypnotic ballad with Klein on sitar, Wendt on acoustic guitar, Rich Mercurio on percussion and Martha Colby on cello. Wendt was formerly lead singer of the cult band Homer Erotic and she sings "King of the Ghosts," a song by founding member Maggie Dubris. Heather Ferguson, another member of the band, creates the pretty oriental percussions rhythm, Klein plays a great guitar solo and Wendt's singing is awe-inspiring. Another New York singer, Sarah Loveland, sings backing vocals and plays the pennywhistle on "Ask," a rather queer song with hauntingly beautiful vocals. "Here is My Chance" is an intoxicating blues-rock, and finally the title track is another rhythmic rock song with wonderful melodic singing. Sara Wendt has released an album with brilliant songs, brought forward by some of New York's most remarkable artists. Her singing as well as her songwriting is excellent and the recording quality is first class. |
