Coles Whalen,
Nothing is Too Much
(Iconic, 2007)

Coles Whalen released her latest EP Nothing is Too Much with five self-crafted songs and a brilliant cover version of Kris Delmhorst's "Honeyed Out." Whalen gathered a bunch of great musicians and recorded it in her home state of Colorado with producer and band member Christopher Jak.

The CD starts with the tender sound of the piano and Whalen's rich and warm singing; "Call on Me" she sings with her powerful voice. This breathtaking rock anthem is one of my favourites. But Whalen also sings hauntingly beautiful ballads like "When You Were Here," good old rock-style songs like "How Do You Do This to Me" and earthy country-rock like "The Getting Side."

The EP ends with another favourite of mine, Delmhorst's "Honeyed Out." Jason "Slim" Gambill and Jak set the background with virtuoso guitar licks, Darren Hahn on drums and Karl Alvarez on bass create the intoxicating rhythm and Whalen sings the blues and plays the keyboards.

For me, Coles Whalen is one of the most exciting singers of the American singer-songwriter scene. Her songwriting is excellent and she works with brilliant musicians. Check her out.
