West of Eden, The West of Eden Travelogue (Zebra Art, 2009) West of Eden has been producing good music for many years. The latest album, The West of Eden Travelogue, again displays a wonderful eclectic collection of new works. To my mind the opening tracks do not play to the band's strengths, so if you are new to this group delve a bit deeper. At track four you will hit the motherlode with "Jimmy's Van." This is a great upbeat anthem for anyone who has toured for music or fun. One can visualize the sun, sea, sand and rain on an extended trip through the Emerald Isle. In fact, it could be a lovely inspiration for a television documentary. Jenny Schaub has us strolling through "Buttercup Meadow," on which she is both singer and writer. If you must judge an album by one song, try this one. It's the signature sound of West of Eden. Another excellent track is "In a Faraway Town," a lovely story song. But Jenny doesn't have it all to herself. "One Pair of Shoes" gives the male vocals of Martin Schaub an outing. This is another excellent track that will have your foot tapping. Over the dozen tracks on offer here, West of Eden proves its credentials once again. |
