Y: The Last Man, developed by Eliza Clark (Hulu, 2021) It's been 15 years or so since I finished reading the Y: The Last Man comic-book series. I enjoyed the books, and when I heard it had been converted into a series I planned to watch it. Then I learned that Hulu was purging its offerings for, I guess, money, and Y: The Last Man, a one-season, 10-episode show, was among its products scheduled for deletion. I quickly tried to get through the series but only made it two episodes in before, poof, it was gone. Let's keep this brief. The series started strongly, with interesting character development and a plot foundation that was strong. I truly wish the Disney+/Hulu conglomerate was financially strong enough to retain its full catalogue of shows and movies, but apparently that's not the case. I honestly am not sure after all this time how faithful to the books this series is. Some bits feel familiar, some do not. On its own merits, however, I was intrigued enough that I would have enjoyed continuing this series to its conclusion. The series starred Ben Schnetzer as Yorick Brown, the sole survivor of a sudden plague that killed the rest of the world's men. It also featured Olivia Thirlby as his sister Hero Brown, an EMT; Diane Lane as his mother Jennifer Brown, who was a U.S. congresswoman until the plague left her the highest ranking official in the federal government and, therefore, president of the United States; Ashley Romans as the mysterious Agent 355; Juliana Canfield as Beth Deville, Yorick's missing girlfriend; and Paris Jefferson and Amber Tamblyn as Marla Campbell and Kimberly Campbell Cunningham, the wife and daughter of the late president. I don't know how this show would have turned out in the end, but I enjoyed the beginning. Its deletion is the consumer's loss. |
