Charlie Zahm,
Lighthouse on the Shore
(independent, 2007)

Pick up any collection of Charlie Zahm's music and you'll quickly realize the big man with the powerful baritone sings with gusto and a genuine love for his music.

That passion is best typified in a live music experience, however. At one such performance recently, I was delighted to realize that Zahm had a live recording I'd somehow overlooked.

Taped live in 2007 at the Millburn Stone Memorial Theater at Cecil Community College in Northeast, Md., the performance features Zahm at his vocal best.

The CD is dominated by Scottish and Irish songs, including "Westering Home," "Follow Me Up to Carlow," "Mairi's Wedding," "Minstrel Boy" and "Scotland the Brave." Other songs range from Nova Scotia ("Out on the Mira," "Farewell to Nova Scotia") to Broadway ("Memory") and include a handful of Zahm originals: "Summer Rains," "Sweet Virginia," "Lighthouse on the Shore").

I usually see Charlie perform solo or coupled with fiddler Tad Marks. Marks again joins him here, as do several other musicians: Steve Hobson on guitar, Joe Spinelli on upright bass and Cheryl Prashker on percussion, as well as a guest singer, not mentioned in the liner notes and introduced on the album only as Suzanne.

All combined, it's an excellent concert experience, proof that Zahm sings equally well in the studio or on the stage.
