Your impression of Michele de Wilton's recording Myths & Legends will depend somewhat on what you expect going in.

Judging by the title alone, I expected something a little livelier than de Wilton delivers. A talented pianist and composer, she has filled this new-age album with a baker's dozen of solo piano tracks inspired at some level by mythology. Hence titles including "Cupid & Psyche," "Lady of Shalott," "Galatea," "Ilium" and "Voyage of the Argo."

Well, Jason must have had a pretty tame voyage, judging by the sleepy-eyed tune his legend inspired. And that, I'm afraid, is true of everything offered here: the music doesn't evoke great deeds so much as it encourages listeners to find a quiet corner and take a little nap.

On the other hand, people who aren't fooled by the title and anticipate a very mellow, low-key recording of background piano music will be overjoyed by what they find here. There's no denying de Wilton's skill at writing a tune or at performing it, and each of the 13 tracks here is a testament to her abilities.

This CD is perfect material for the background at a dinner party or art gallery opening. It would fit well in the lobby of an upscale hotel, in a fine-dining restaurant or even in the confines of an elegant wood-and-marble elevator. I caution listeners from playing it while driving, however, or while operating heavy machinery.

Played softly in the bedroom, Myths & Legends would also provide a soothing precursor to a good night's sleep.
