Preacher #6: War in the Sun
by Garth Ennis, Steve Dillon (DC Comics/Vertigo, 1999)

Editor's note: We started reviewing the Preacher series a long time ago. For various reasons, the series of reviews ran out of steam. Tom Knapp picks up now where he left off.

There have always been a lot of questions about the Grail, the ancient organization that has safeguarded the bloodline of Christ for the past 2,000 years, as well as the Grail's decidedly unholy plans for the world. War in the Sun provides some answers, as well as the backstory for the enigmatic Herr Starr, a highly placed operative who overthrew the corpulent Allfather and assumed his place in the ranks.

That chapter segues quickly back into the ongoing saga of Jesse Custer, the eponymous preacher of the series, who has been possessed by the power of Genesis and wields the Word of God. He, along with his girlfriend Tulip and his best mate Cassidy, the Irish vampire, are seeking God in a literal sense, to find out why the Lord abandoned his creation. Meanwhile, Herr Starr is seeking Custer, both for official Grail business as well as some personal revenge. The Saint of Killers is also on the move, requiring information on his past that only Custer can provide.

They'll all come together in Monument Valley, Ariz. Things get intense. Bloody. And, eventually, radioactive.

But the explosive action that is the climax of this volume does not end the tale. Before this book is done, we have a great deal more ground to cover, including the surprising, individual fates of Custer, Tulip, Cassidy and Herr Starr. Believe me, you won't see any of this coming. Oh, and Custer acquires a dog.

And you'll be back for volume 7.
