Melissa Marr, Wicked Lovely (HarperTeen, 2007)
Unfortunately, Ash (as Aislinn prefers to be called) catches the eye of Faery's Summer King, Keenan. He's sought a bride for the past 900 years. Signs are evident that Ash could be the one -- especially when his own mother -- Beira, the Winter Queen -- breaks the rules and starts to interfere. Wicked Lovely is an interesting read with more than one great twist. I enjoyed the book, but I believe that the second will be much better. It's always hard to build a world in a first novel particularly in fantasy where there is a blend of the real, fantasy and that surreal element that the combination elicits. My biggest problem is -- I really never got a description of Ash. "Beautiful" from someone else's lips doesn't count. I wanted to see more of her. I also wanted to see more of the places where the stories took place. Just a few words would engage the reader much more. One very strong plus -- the ending was excellent. Very well done, and I would hope to see a more well-developed second novel. ![]() |
