Julie Powell has a beautiful voice, and she uses it to great effect on this CD. The tracks on Heart of a Woman are listed as a collection of traditional hymns and spirituals alongside some ballads from Powell's own pen. Unfortunately, the literature makes it difficult to differentiate, as the notation marks are far from distinct.

"In the Garden" is a beautiful rendition of some lovely lyrical and spiritual sentiments. The cleanly arranged accompaniments make this a unique track that bears repeated listening. The title track, "Heart of a Woman," is a very well-written piece that again will touch many hearts and souls.

"Were You There" is definitely one of the spirituals and is an excellent rendition of a familiar piece. It is alternately uplifting and haunting as Powell gives it to us without accompaniment.

This is a rather short album with only eight tracks, including an instrumental intro. It is very enjoyable but could have been more interesting if it had included lyrics and some background of the tracks on offer.
