Powers #5: Anarchy by Brian Michael Bendis, Michael Avon Oeming (Image, 2003) |
Not everyone views superpowered beings as a boon to society. Immediately after Omega 6 defeats a villain over a busy downtown street, an anti-powers anarchist hurls a flaming cocktail that quickly burns the hero to death. Moments later, as the stunned crowd watches him die, the mysterious assailant decapitates the tied-up villain, too. It's a harsh beginning for the fifth collection in Powers, an amazing series from Image by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Michael Avon Oeming. Superhero slayings are never taken lightly, and it's up to homicide detective Deena Pilgrim, with her new partner Det. Argento, to figure out why Omega 6 is only the most recent in a series of violent murders. And, as Powers fans were no doubt hoping, it isn't long before disgraced and retired cop Christian Walker is brought in to lend assistance. Before it's all sorted out, there are more messy deaths -- par for the course with this title -- and a bit of police brutality. There are tears, laughter and some well-earned applause. And, by the end, you'll have a better understanding of the mentality found in a world where the mighty walk -- or fly -- among us. by Tom Knapp |
